ePI and the future of medicines information

Dec 18, 2023

In this insightful article published on Fierce Pharma, Datapharm's Principal Architect, Philippe Michiels, explains where Pharma and Healthcare are heading with the future of medicines information in a new, fully-structured format.

Pharma companies are compelled by law to publish their regulated information, such as SmPCs and PILs, alongside the medicines they market. However, the way in which this information is presented to patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs) is currently far from optimal.

The medicines information we have been so accustomed to seeing online is unstructured, which creates difficulties with making it more engaging for HCPs and patients, and impossible for achieving interoperability across different healthcare settings.

But an answer to these problems is beginning to look much clearer in 2023.

The future of medicines information lies in how we use a standard ePI (electronic Product Information) - it is about to change how healthcare systems interpret and exchange medicines information.

When a standard ePI is adopted on a wide scale, we then can make better use of medicine product information and support improved patient engagement and adherence.
